为什么有人成功有人不成功？为什么有人“成功”了也不幸福，有人很幸福尽管看上去也许不甚“成功”？

 

我写这篇文字，也不想批评别人对于金钱的态度，而主要是自恋我自己对于金钱的美好心态：我爱你，小平！认识我的人都知道，有钱时我是慷慨的，但没钱时，我也同样慷慨。因为，一个人的价值观决定了他的为人处事，而不是他的财富量。

 

就刚到美国几十小时内发生的这两次付出来说：第一次我是为了荣誉，第二次我是为了友情。荣誉和友情，实在是比金钱更加重要的东西。在这个“刚到美国，身上只有50美元，月收入只有10美元”的典型环境中发生的这两次典型行为，毫无疑问，反映了我身上最引为骄傲、我也最看重的一种品格。我号召大家向我学习！

 

让我再讲一个令我很崇拜的故事：我有一个朋友，来自江西农村，通过个人努力，变得非常成功富有。每次在一起喝茶吃饭聚会，都是他抢着付帐。我说我来，他说他来。每次争夺过程中，他都要说一句话，几乎成了他的仪式。

 

他说：“徐老师，我来我来，小时我妈常常跟我说‘天天待客不穷，夜夜做贼不富’，我来我来，不必客气……”

 

这真是一个伟大的母亲，难怪她的儿子赤手空拳来到北京，变得如此成功富有呢！

According to the author, adopting a set of restriction on landscaping and housepainting will bring a rise of property values to Deerhaven Acres in that homeowners in nearby Brookville community made a success by doing so seven years ago. At first glance, there seems to be an element of truth in this argument. However, after a close inspection, we can find this argument suffers from several critical fallacies. The following analysis will reveal how flimsy the argument is.

 

To begin with, the argument based his conclusion on the assumption that the restrictions adopted by Brookville on how the community’s yards should be landscaped and what colors the exteriors of homes should be painted was rigidly executed. Nevertheless, the arguer provides no evidence to prove this assumption.

 

In the second place, the arguer fails to rule out other possibility that can contribute to the tripled property values in Brookville. It is entirely possible that the growth in economy of Brookville can give a boost to the property values. It is equally possible that increased investment from the government for some reason will also raise the house prices. It is also reasonable that more and more people are willing to live in Brookville because it beautify natural scenes so that values of real estate doubles or triples.

 

Another reason why I dispute with the writer’s statement is that even the adoption of restriction was effective in improving the property values in Brookwille, it is entirely possible that the adoption does not apply to Deerhaven Acres because there may exist instinct difference between the two regions.

 

What is also worth noticing is that the method used seven year ago may not still be as successful as it was a long time ago by reason that time can change almost everything. Imagine, for instance, people used to paying full attention to colors but now they attach little importance on colors. For another example, uniform appearance was emphasized seven years ago so that restrictions adopted by Brookwille boosted property values while today difference is valued so that restrictions, if adopted by Deerhaven Acres, may well lower the property values.

 

From what has been discussed above, we can safely come to the conclusion that the argument, although it seems logical at first, is not well reasoning and lacks credibility because the evidence cited in the analysis does not lead to strong support to what the arguer maintains. Additionally, in order to support the argument, it would be essential for the arguer to conduct a effective and representative survey to find out the true features that are valued highly by the local residents in Deerhaven Acres and the real method that apply to Deerhaven Acres.
